Cash, loan, lease, or PPA: how the deals really differ
How you pay for solar matters as much as the equipment. The same panels can be a reasonable investment or a costly mistake depending on the contract. Here's the honest version of each option.
Buy it outright
You own the system and everything it produces, with no interest or monthly payment. It's usually the lowest total cost, but it ties up a large sum, and whether it pays off depends on your usage, roof, utility rules, and how long you stay.
Finance and own it
You own the system and repay a lender. Watch for 'low rate' solar loans that hide a dealer fee in the price, which can inflate what you owe. Compare the cash price with the financed price, and consider quotes from your own bank or credit union.
Someone else owns it
A company owns the panels; you pay a monthly lease or a per-kWh rate, often with yearly escalators, for 20 years or more. Little or no money down, but these contracts can complicate selling your home. Read the escalator, buyout, and transfer terms closely.
Three steps. No cost to you.
Expert Solar ATL is a referral service, not a contractor. Partner companies pay for referrals, so the request is free for you.

Questions, answered
Is this service free?
Yes. There's no cost to you to request help. Solar installers in our network pay for referrals. You only pay the company you hire, you're never obligated to hire anyone, and we encourage you to get other quotes too.
Are you a solar installer?
No. We're an independent referral service. We don't sell, install, finance, or lease solar equipment. We pass your request to an independent, licensed and insured solar installer serving your area, and they contact you directly. Any contract is between you and that company.
How fast will someone contact me?
For systems that have stopped working or been damaged, the goal is a call back as soon as possible during business hours. For new installations and quotes, expect contact within a business day or so. A good installer won't rush you to decide.
How does net metering work with Georgia Power?
Georgia Power's arrangements for crediting the solar power you send to the grid have been limited and have changed over time, and exported energy has often been credited at less than the retail rate. EMCs and city utilities set their own rules. Check your utility's current terms and Georgia Public Service Commission decisions before relying on any savings estimate.
Is there a federal tax credit for home solar?
According to IRS guidance, the federal residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Incentives can change, so don't rely on a salesperson's claims. Check current IRS guidance and talk to a tax professional before counting on any credit.
